Social Justice and the Pain of Others

It’s long been a false dichotomy:  that some people are drawn to spirituality and meditation and that others are drawn to caring for others and issues of social justice.  When we integrate the spiritual dimension of life, we become more compassionate people.  Because we become more compassionate and aware of the suffering of others, we begin to do things to alleviate that suffering.  That is the work of social justice.

  1. Thanks for the thoughtful message. I am reminded of the old Christian hymn words, “they will know we are Christians by our love”. I’m glad your friend Dan personifies love, compassion, and care in spaces where it may be harder to find. What a precious role model for us all.

    1. He was indeed a great man. He died a few years back. Our paths initially crossed in social justice work against nuclear proliferation in the 70s. In the 80s, we were both doing AIDS-related work. He was a principled man with a gracious and generous spirit.
